Trust me...

Trust is an interesting thing. Even a scary thing at times. But it's something we do every day, inadvertently.

We were driving to Devon just after Christmas for some time away after a busy year full of many changes. I quit my job, started (and successfully completed) a Data Science bootcamp, our son started Reception, and our daughter seemed to have become an 8-year old teenager overnight. Anyway. I was driving us to a place in Devon I've never been to, using Google Maps to guide our way. I tried to work out how we  used to travel before phone based GPS's were a thing (I still can't remember what that was like...).

Anyway.

I realised that we were putting our trust in something without knowing how it works to get us somewhere we've never been, on a road where we didn't see the destination until we got there (in the dark). That's trust. And never once did I doubt that we'll get there.

Then I realised that we were putting our trust in Google Maps for a couple of reasons:

  1. Google knew the way. And it knew the way because it knew where we were and where we wanted to go.
  2. Google knew the best way. And it knew the best way because many travellers have gone down those roads (or at least different parts of it) before.
  3. Google has led us to the right destinations before. We used Google Maps to get to a lot of different places before (i.e. we put our trust in Google before) and were not disappointed.
As we stand at the start of another year with so much uncertainty and inevitable, unexpected change ahead, let us remind ourselves who we can put our trust in. The One who has a better track record than any GPS map service.
  1. God knows the way. God knows the way because He knows where every one of us are and where we need to get to.
  2. We're in a community also on the way. God surrounds us with people who have travelled the way (or at least different parts of it) as well.
  3. We know God is faithful. We have put our trust in God before and He has come through every time. Sometimes even when we didn't ask Him to...
May you know God's guidance, grace and generosity this year. And may you show your gratitude by following Him faithfully and prayerfully.
